History
It was formed around 2006 but was officially established by its managers on July 1, 2008, it was the 4th rugby team that Ecuador saw born and the first in the city of Cuenca, with the endorsement of the University del Azuay and the Ecuadorian Rugby Federation. The beginnings of the team comes from the hand of a group of students from the University of Azuay who had heard about the existence of this sport called Rugby and their desire to practice it was born, that is why they managed to get in touch with Douglas Rodríguez (Venezuelan ex-rugbier) who collaborated with the boys to teach them what he knew about the sport. Little by little, among friends, the invitation to practice it spread, and that is how the first XV's team, made up mostly of students and alumni of the Universidad del Azuay, emerged, from then on the team began to grow and along with the other 3 teams already formed in the country decided to participate in the first official edition of the XV's National Rugby Championship.
Shortly after the team is already involved in the National Tournament, the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee includes rugby in its Olympic cycle since 2009 in which Águilas R.C. He participated, thus in that same year and in 2010 he obtained a podium in the Ecuadorian Beach Olympic Festivals modality 5's "obtaining bronze and gold respectively. These 2 events were the first and last editions that were held with clubs, as of this date Only provincial teams that involved Pichincha, Guayas and Azuay were allowed to participate, which were made up of members of clubs from all over the country.
For the year 2013 and after having several players involved in the national teams of Rugby in its different modalities Águilas Rugby Club becomes part of a group of high-performance teams, so on February 22, 2013 the Ministry of the Sport recognizes the club as "Specialized Sports Club of High Performance Eagles Rugby Club", which involved a challenge for the club to always stay active in all tournaments organized nationally as well as to train new players with high sports performance.
In 2019 after having the endorsement of the University of Azuay for more than 13 years and having the recognition of High Performance among other external factors, the separation between the club and the University occurs, and the club becomes a club "of the city "which impelled to go further and seek sponsorship purely from the private sector, so now the club is made up of not only students from different universities but also graduates, professionals in different areas and athletes in general of any nationality that like this sports practice.
